Beast Legends is SyFy's newest show that explores the mythical creatures that have captured our imaginations. The goal of the show is to learn as much as possible about the creatures and then create a realistic interpretation of how it would look in our world today. The premiere episode goes with a fan favorite; the Kraken.

The Kraken has been seen in all forms of media including literature, film, and television. It's a massive octopus-like creature that has the capability to sink entire ships and their crews to the depths of the ocean. We've seen the creature in many forms but the team behind Beast Legends - which includes scientists, legend experts, animators, etc. - want to create one that's more realistic than that.

In order to accomplish this task. The team looks at live octopuses and squids and take the best features from both. They then digitally create this monstrosity and let it wreck havoc. If you ever wanted to know more about the creatures behind the legends, then this is the show for you.

One aspect of the show I didn't like was the comic book artist on the team. Yes, they had a comic book artist among scientists. That's not what bothered me. What bothered me was that he was almost useless. One scene has him scaling a 100 foot mast out in the ocean so he could get a good "perspective" on how big the tentacles would be so he could then do a quick sketch. Add in the fact that he can't swim and is afraid of heights and it makes for some good suspense. Other than that, it seem completely pointless for the show. Besides, it was the digital animator who was doing all the creation of the Kraken anyway.

Overall, I would say that the Kraken isn't the strongest of mythical creatures to have for the premiere of a show but it does manage to capture your attention and interest, especially when we think we've already seen all there is about the beast. The premise of Beast Legends is good, let's just hope we get to see more dragons and minotaurs and less comic book artists.
