Show: Shin Chan Season/Volume: 3 Genre: Anime Starring: Laura Bailey, Chuck Huber Studio: Funimation Runtime: 300 min Release Date: July 26, 2011 Discs: 2 Rating: () Grade: D+ BOTTOM LINE: Don't expect too much. Because just like Shin Chans' pants, some things can really let you down. Children say the darndest things. With their little minds running wild with sugar and excitement, children seem to get into the craziest situations. Like, what the dog does all day. Or if the monsters lurking in their closet are an actual threat. There's no doubt that having a kid in your household will result in some hilariously strange situations. However, none of these scenarios will ever touch how insane and outrageous the situations are when Shin Chan is involved. From beach trips to getting involved with a hormone-driven cheerleader to trying mushrooms, Shin Chan and his friends seem to go through almost everything imaginable. Don't let his looks fool you, this little kid is far from the normal children you've ever met. Spitting profanities and dropping his pants at every chance possible, Shin Chan is a little bit of a trouble maker. When Shin Chan is involved, the sky is the limit as to how far things will go. This is pretty much the limit of Shin Chan, the popular japanese animation show. The soul purpose of this show is to shock viewers with a child surrounded by vulgar language, sex and drugs. After a episodes in, it becomes fairly clear that Shin Chan is aiming for the target audience of South Park and Family Guy fans. Sadly, their aim is a little misguided. There are almost no character story arcs, just situations that would be humorous for others to imagine. Coming from a South Park fan, story arcs aren't always neccesary but are ways to connecting to the characters every once and a while. Shin Chan likes to throw away all of that "development" nonsense and focus on the laughs! Which wouldn't be a problem if the humor didn't solely rely on shock value. Even the animation of Shin Chan is something mostly void of inspiration. With colors running outside of characters' body frames and shaky images taking up most of the runtime, admiration of the animation is entirely absent. It took a few episodes to realize that the animation is intended to look this way, but it never comes across why the studio/animators would continue to work this way. Since this is the first half of the third season, it's obvious that success and popularity are no issue. So why not take some time and money to develop a better looking show with a more story-based script with humor riddled throughout? But then again, Shin Chan is not a show about story development. I may just not be a fan of Anime. I will say that the fanbase of Shin Chan is one that is faithful to the end. Everyone who has spoken of Shin Chan has had nothing but high praise for the series and has seen no sign of the developers letting them down. So in a phrase, if you love Shin Chan, then Shin Chan Season 3 Part 1 is the Season/Part for you! To fans of Family Guy, South Park and basically any other adult-themed cartoon show on air currently, be sure to give Shin Chan a chance. But don't expect too much. Because just like Shin Chans' pants, some things can really let you down. |
