CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Against Me! has been on the music scene for over 13 years! On Saturday, June 19th, Atlanta residents crowded themselves into the Tabernacle to see Florida's own punks, Against Me!. Even though they were providing support for headliners Silversun Pickups, Against Me! had the majority of the crowd in the palm of their hand as existing fans. Whether it was air-born fists, lips matching that of lead singer Tom Gabel's lyrics or just hands in the air, fans were pumped and ready for the show ahead. But was the show ready for them? At about 8:45 pm, lights went down, screaming grew loud and Against Me! took the stage. Lined along the stage, guitar amps were covered in white tape that spelled out messages, such as: "I Want To Smash Them All" and "Daughters In Arm, We Are All Orphans". Not surprisingly, both are lyrics from two different tracks on their new album, "White Crosses". Opening the show with the album's opening track of the same name, the crowd was immediately trapped by the hooks and vocals thrown at them. Sadly, Against Me! played a catalog that ranged on their 2 most recent albums, rather than the number albums they have released since 1997. However, the songs were familiar and enjoyable to say the least. Mainly because they consist of infective melodies and are riddled with messages of anti-corporation and rebellion. Unfortunately, that's not all what sells a successive concert experience. The performance of Against Me! felt like one with no personality. All members came out, gave a small wave, played their songs and left. No connection to the audience, no voice outside of their music or lyrics and what seemed like no emotion. Crowds feed off of not only music, but also off experience and connection. I have been to plenty of concerts before and the majority of them were incredibly enjoyable because of the relationship the band builds between the audience and themselves. After all, they all payed good money to come see them perform. But even though the connection wasn't apparent, fans still applauded the performance and had a good time. Although their live experience can definitely improve, Against Me! put on a show that will have you singing along and searching for their new album, "White Crosses" Check out: "Sink Florida Sink", "Thrash Unreal" and "White Crosses".
