"Trigger" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this past September and on November 22nd it was released on DVD. The movie is about two sobered up female rock star friends, Kat (Molly Parker) & Vic (Tracy Wright), that somehow cross paths again and attempt to mend their friendship and re-kindle their fame and past success. The movie was directed by Bruce McDonald. Shakefire had a chance to discuss the movie with Bruce.

Shakefire: What was it about “Trigger” that peaked your interest to direct it?

Bruce McDonald: I’ve been a long time fan of writer Daniel MacIvor, his plays and his movies. His screenplay for Trigger was tip-top and that’s what attracted me to this project.

SF: Were there any obstacles that you dealt with in directing Trigger?

BM: Actually there were almost no obstacles, because we had the incredible support of our film community, who were all there to make Tracey Wright’s last movie.

SF: What was it about Molly Parker & Tracy Wright that you felt made them fit so well into their roles in the movie?

BM: I had worked with both of them before on a show called “Twitch City.” They had an interesting dynamic with each other back then and Daniel and I were sure this chemistry would work again. So we pretty much designed the movie for the two of them.

SF: Why was the TIFF chosen to debut the movie?

BM: TIFF seemed to choose us. They were looking for a movie to open their fabulous new HQ called “The Lightbox” and they were attracted to “Trigger” because of its independent spirit, it’s Toronto story and the beauty and wonder at its heart. We were honored to be a part of this new chapter of TIFF.

SF: You've had a lot of experience in directing. What lessons did you learn from directing several episodes of Queer as Folk?

BM: Don’t rattle the cage too much or you’ll be fired.

SF: How was it working with the rapper now known as Drake (Aubrey Graham) on “Degrassi: The Next Generation?”

BM: Aubrey was always very sleepy on the set of Degrassi. He would often talk about his new “friends” Dr. Dre and Eminem. The crew and myself all thought he was insane, but that’s Canada for you.

SF: Do you have any upcoming projects we should look out for?

BM: Yup! I have “Hard Core Logo II” and “Music From the Big House” coming out soon.
